Keratosis Pilaris

What is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis Pilaris is a non contagious skin condition, which can affect the backs of the arms, thighs, the backs of the legs, face and other parts of the body.

Why does it feel ruff to touch?

This is due to the over production of keratin, a natural protein that is found in the skin, hair and nails. Keratin is known to build up around the opening where the leaves the skin and creates a white hard lumpy mass, which creates a ruff bumpy surface. The keratin plugs block the opening of the hair follicle and kind go quite deep, which if picked or caught, can lead to bleeding. It normally appears in drier skins and appears to be worse in the cold months.

What does Keratosis Pilaris mean?

Keratosis means the over growth of the horny layer in the skin, this is the top layer, the one that sheds every day; it is a thick layer, that can be dry and ruff to touch. Pilaris comes from the Latin for hair (pilus).

How do I treat it?

This is not contagious and I have found it responds, well to lactic acid peels, which gently break down the hardened thicken skin plugs. One of my favourite, treatments is sour cream face or a live bio natural yogurt mask, as this helps to increase the probiotic on the skins surface. As well as being natural, it gently softens the harden KP. A gentle sugar and honey exfoliation has the most amazing skin glow effect. Honey is anti bacterial and by its sticky nature it encourages a gentle vacuum to be created, through a massage application, encouraging the lymphatic and blood system to work. Sugar creates a natural catalytic energy, with encourages warmth and the grains, gentle help remove stubborn plugs. Treatment protocols I would recommend and have used over the years, are galvanic (should only be carried out by a qualified therapist), to help to break down the build up of dead skin cells, by a process called "Saponification" this not only aids the removal of the plugs, but softens the skin, allowing products to be absorbed.

I also use dermaplaning also known as 'Kao Sori' or the latest trend focused facial, which is ideal on KP as I in corporate a layered peel system, which softens and allows the skin to absorption of products and the used of PDT light therapy.
